Monday 24th February – ski *** - Lelex in the Jura – sunny

Good night in the ski car park at Lelex in the Jura and woke to another clear blue day, the last for a while if the weather forecast is to be believed as rain and snow are approaching. We wanted to make the most of the lovely day so decided to go with our plan of skiing and take a chance that the snow was OK at the top. It was pretty thin on the ground low down and it was amazing they had managed to keep the run back to the resort open! We were also hoping that things had quietened down being a Monday but it is still French half term and sadly we were disappointed on both counts. The snow conditions up high (I say high but the resorts here in the Jura are pretty low with this one being only 1600m at the top) were poor and also it was very busy so not to our liking at all:( With people dropping kids off at the school/creche nearby it made us get ready earlier than we expected and we had had breakfast, sorted the ski gear out, struggled into our ski boots and were walking up the road to the cable car by 9.45. The lift pass for the day was only 62 Euros including insurance so we were set for a good day as we entered the cable car. Then as we neared the top all six people in the bubble looked decidedly disappointed by the state of the snow conditions, nothing had been pisted due to lack of snow and the highest point to the left had very little snow on it at all! There are only a few lifts here - the cable car up plus a 6 man lift to the top and a few buttons. We headed down the green to the 6 man but it was like skiing a mogul field in places, very busy with beginners struggling down. It was nerve racking skiing down with people whizzing past both sides of you and it was amazing that there were not more accidents! There was always a big queue at the 6 man but it moved fast so not too bad. At the top we turned right to check out our favourite long red but the barriers were up saying piste closed:( Then an old ski instructor took a few kids down the red and we decided to follow and what a big mistake that was! The kids were doing a short slalom course but the piste was really bad, pretty steep and icy and thread bear in places too, I really struggled and Mag more so with her short skies! The slalom kids soon turned off right but we continued down the red - side slipping most of the way, the only good thing being we had it all to ourselves! Then thank goodness we made it to the bottom and had to walk out as there was no snow on the tree lined path back to the lift! Back to the top a few times to try a variety of reds and blues but only patches of good snow, the best was actually the run down to the village. It was then back to the very top where we found a nice quiet clump of rocks sheltered from the breeze with stunning views down to Geneva, Lac Leman, Mont Blanc and the high Alps but our peace was soon shattered when loads of French decided to join us for lunch ruining our peace and quiet:( Still the rolls were great, it was warm and we watched planes take off from Geneva airport, and Chambary too. Mag told me about the large bird she had seen which probably turned out to be a golden eagle! Refreshed from our lunch we had another hour or so and found an OK red but with our legs getting tired we decided to call it a day and headed back to the van. We packed the gear away, visited the local shop for milk and bread and drove away from the busy car park to the much quieter one just along the road at Mijoux. After a cuppa with bread and jam and still wall to wall sunshine I decided to do my exercises while Mag read. Not sure what we will do for the next week with snow and rain coming but will have a look at Geneva and hope to get out walking somewhere too!
